According to Brandon Hunter of MichiganPreps.com, former Winnipeg Blue Bomber and Swarco Raider (Austria) Wendell Brown has been languishing in jail in China since last September after getting into an altercation with a few Chinese locals in a bar in Chongqing, China.
Brown, who was helping coaching the Chongqing Dockers of the American Football League of China, had apparently been out with some friends when according to witnesses, he was provoked by a group of locals who were upset that Brown would not party with them. One of the men escalated the incident by throwing a glass bottle at Brown, who retaliated out of self-defense. The local police were contacted following the altercation, and allegedly only arrested Brown. He has been in jail ever since.
If not partying is a crime, then call me Charles Manson.
China, however, is one of those places where you put your head down and go about your business. Stay in line and don’t mess around. Like North Korea or Russia. A citizen of that country wants to party with you? You party with them, no questions asked. Have to be under the assumption there’s secret police everywhere looking to get a gold star from the sergeant for bringing in an American. It’s a bit of an escalation for the guy to start throwing bottles when Wendell says he doesn’t want to party with him, sure. As human beings, we’re better than that.
Lastly, let’s take a moment to tip our hats to Wendell for never giving up on the dream of being a pro football player. Who even knew there was a football league in Austria? And China? (I knew about China, not to brag). These can’t be leagues where people are receiving a paycheck. Austria gives you a chicken every week as your payment, and in China I’m imagining they’re factory leagues like baseball was in the 1890s. Where you get a nice job at the steel factory because you can play football for the boss. #FreeWendell
