Everyone’s figuring that after last night’s draft lottery, it’s a lock for Lonzo Ball to go to the Lakers. They’ve been saying that since Lonzo was like 15 anyways, and to be honest they’ll pull an Eli Manning/Kobe Bryant if he doesn’t go to the Lakers. But should the Lakers actually get him, from a basketball standpoint?
The Lakers future rests in Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, and Brandon Ingram, at the least. We can all agree on that. But what about D’Angelo Russell? Because if you’re going to keep D’Angelo Russell, why would you take Lonzo Ball? They have a blaring need at the 3 (don’t tell me Ingram’s going to be their 3, he’s a stretch 4) that they need to fill in, and there’s only two guys that fill that in early in the draft: Jayson Tatum and Josh Jackson. Lonzo Ball’s done the thing where he just says “Lonzo Ball and Lakers” so many times in the same sentence that the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Lonzo Ball is the Lakers. But I don’t think it’s a good fit if you’re going to keep D’Angelo Russell and let him progress (he was a 15 and 5 guy last year). It’s hard to have two guys progress at the same position at the same time. Shoot and if you’re not going to keep D’Angelo Russell, well then you might as well package him with that 2 pick and go get Paul George. I’ve gotten off track here. Full mock draft coming next week, stay tuned.
