Unconfirmed Report Claims Lavar Ball’s Not Letting His Kids Visit Their Hospitalized Mother

Via Armchair All American:

I received a comment on it from a member of the Ball family, who wishes to remain anonymous. The comment (which has since been removed to protect the email address and identity of the commenter) read as follows:

Tina Ball, his wife had a stroke on Feb 21. She had life threatening skull surgery to relieve brain pressure – guess where Lavar was during the operation that could have killed his wife? – at the CHHS vs. LB Poly game with his sons, including Lonzo. He still has not allowed his kids to see their sick mother due to the media attention it would bring to him, and cause BBB sales to diminish. [Name of hospital] in [City of hospital], CA – Tina is there now and he only visits for 1 hour a few days a week, while her Mother has yet to leave her side. Pathetic!!!”

When confirming the identity of the member of the Ball family that commented via email, we received another large piece of harrowing information:

“Notice, she is not at any games, she is not at work, and she is not at home. Someone needs to ask the question, where is Tina? She is severely disabled and paralyzed on right side. Cannot talk and is questionable about her comprehension. Left side of her brain impacted with massive stroke, while at home on Feb. 21 (school holiday – President’s day). Tina is a PE teacher in Montclair, CA (Vernon middle school).
Feb. 20: Tina Ball admitted at [Name of first hospital] ICU
Feb. 21: Surgery to remove a portion of her skull to reduce swelling from the stroke (evening)
Feb 21: Chino Hills vs LB Poly @ Cerritos College – evening  game (same time as surgery) Lavar & Lonzo at the game with the other Ball boys – missed the surgery and post op. Did not come to hospital during or after surgery.
The Ball boys are not allowed to see their mother, Lavar is afraid it will take away from their game(s). Lonzo had big game at ASU and U of A later that week. Also, media buzz would take away from all the interviews and media touring for Lavar + BBB brand would suffer. It literally is bigger than Tina’s life, as evidenced by Lavar’s approach.
As a family member, I am embarrassed and feel so sorry for Tina, since Lavar is on a media tour, he visits her rarely, while her mother has stayed by her side continuously.”
Never have I heard of Armchair All American before, so that’s the first reason to cast doubt. An anonymous comment on an article is sketch. And their verification methods are probably very limited, considering they seem to be a blog about our size. This isn’t Tina’s sister or mother or some close close relative to the Balls. Because first why are they reading Armchair All American? And if they have this exclusive, why aren’t they going to ESPN, Deadspin, etc. I’d guess it’s a cousin of a cousin, or a friend of a friend of a cousin, and you and I both know that the farther out you get from the original source the more convoluted and exaggerated the story gets.

So let’s get to what the real story probably is: Lavar’s advising his kids to not miss important basketball games to go see their mother. In a situation like that, I’m positive that the kids want to be by their mothers side, for the surgery and post-op. Not being there on the day your mom has brain surgery? Messed up, absolutely, and something I don’t think any father should make their kids do. But that’s a far far way from being “barred from seeing their mother”. I doubt, as much of a piece of work as dude is, that he’s disallowed them from seeing their mother because it “hurts their brand”. Loving your mother doesn’t hurt your brand, and Lavar knows that. Look how much KD’s mom has helped his brand. When Lonzo says he “doesn’t want to talk about it, because it’s a family thing”, it’s not because he’s being held hostage by his father. It’s because he’d rather not have to talk to millions of people about his mom being on her death bed.
It’s possible it’s all true. And I commend Armchair All American for doing as good of a job as you could expect from a small blog. But anti-Lavar Ball Twitter has become like anti-Trump Twitter, where everyone’s trying to find that one thing that’ll completely take them down. To the point where they take everything as absolute fact. Parts of this could be true. We all know already that Lavar Ball’s more controlling and more vocal than most parents we’ve seen, so telling his sons when they’re able to take off games? Likely. Keeping their kids from seeing their critical condition mother? Doubtful.

The second half of this story has become “how disrespectful it is to ask Lonzo about his mom”. Even after I just defended  the Ball family (for the second time today), you can’t aim to be that famous and dominate the media that much, but then not expect people to pry. They literally invite Bleacher Report into their home every week to get them off the basketball court and talk about their family. Lavar’s trying to turn this family into a famous pop culture family, not just a famous basketball family. Which is fine, do what you gotta do. But I’ve sat there on Twitter before wondering where the mom is, so what makes it disrespectful to ask to Lonzo? This comes with fame, unfortunately. And that sucks. But if you don’t want those questions, don’t make your family into pseudo-reality TV stars.

  1. Look idiots, Mr. Balls prioioty is to provide for his family. He has great family helping out. The best thing he can do is get up and work daily and keep his kids focused on school. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Ball family.
