If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times: guys that can’t give up drugs for a shot in professional sports don’t deserve the shot at professional sports.
Despite that, I’ve got to applaud Randy Gregory, who just failed his 5th drug test in one year, and has checked into a rehab facility.
Maybe it’s a PR move, but let’s be optimistic and say it isn’t. For the first time in a long time, you’ve got an athlete taking the initiative to make himself better. Not saying the rules aren’t fair, or saying “this is who I am, tough stuff if you don’t approve”.
This is a 23 year old who moved homes 8 times during his childhood. Who played 2 years at JUCO, suffering a broken leg in one of them, before failing to qualify academically for the school of his dreams, settling at Nebraska. Who’s taken the blame for the failed drug test, saying “at the end of the day, it was my fault. I was being selfish. I was being stubborn. I felt like I could do things my way and it would work. And it didn’t work.”
That’s a guy with a good head on his shoulders. The intiative’s impressive from a 23 year old, and he clearly has issues he needs to work out. Let’s allow him to work them out, and put them behind him.
